Growing up in the 80s (Part I)

Anyone who had the privilege of seeing the 80s rolled by wud agree how magical it was.

Forget the technological re-tardiness, you had to be there to see it...unfortunately you cant now.....so let's reminisce and go back to Aizawl in the swinging 80s.

TELEVISION - TVs came to Mizoram in the early 80s (late 70s actually), but the common man could afford it only in the late 80s. No cable back then, we had to be content with cartoons on sundays (HeMan, Spiderman, Jimmy & the magic torch, few others i forgot). Those whose adobes happen to be located higher up along the west hills (McDonald, Dawrpui, Chanmari) and westward had reception to Bangladesh network which aired far better programs including cartoons everyday (see how small our joys used to be) and MacGuyver. I remember seeing my first episode of Thundercats at a fren's house after hearing so many lively discussions amongst the exclusive priviledged lot.

Of course, Chitrahar and later Rangoli were the only source of music videos. But what we'd really be waiting for were the commercials/ads/fakna which often run upto 30mins at a stretch (and ppl nowadays curse long ads tsk tsk). On saturday night, there was this informative "The world this week" which my bro never missed.

Saturday and Sunday nights meant...Movies - colour flicks, then later Sunday's was black n white. News in Hindi - never missed them, even tho nothing made sense without the video footage. Lots of serials and soaps....saw few, actually followed a couple.

Coming back to Sundays, after HeMan came Ramayana (later Mahabharata) which we couldnt watch fully cos of Sunday School. And, right after Sunday school, i remember seeeing an Indian version of star trek aired for a year or so. Much later, the sword of Tipu Sultan was aired.

World cups - My 1st WC goes back to 1986 with Maradonna's magic and hand-of god goal. I saw the semis and final at my uncle's, slept thru most of the matches. And i had actually seen (but dont remember) the final of Euro84.

Olympics, especially the opening and closing ceremonies were a must-see. Saw Ben Johnson winning the 100m sprint, Greg Louganis smashed his head on the springboard and USA beating USSR overall in the 88 Seoul.

Saw Pat Cash winning Wimbledon with his trademark checked headband. Saw McEnroe and Boris Becker battled it out, Martina-Graf rivalry and later Graf-Seles.

Movies of the 80s are now described as cheesy. But hey, nothing can beat the thrill of seeing the hero beat up and kill villains after villains in the one-man-army flicks - Rambo or Commando. Action movies like Karate Kid, Rocky series, Bloodsport, The Champ, American Ninja have become cult movies. To top it all, the martial art movies (Kungfu film as we wud call them) like Jackie Chan's, 36th chamber of shaolin(lost count of how many times i saw) and the countless Chinese movies were pure joy.

But i guess as far as movies in Mizoram go (at least in Aizawl), if you had been there in the 80s, you would have seen at least half of these listed

1. Grease2

2. Girls just wanna have fun

3. Terrence Hill & Bud Spencer series

4. Qayamat se quamat tak

5. Khoon Bhari Maang

6. Indian version of Tarzan( Vai tarzan)

7. Raiders of the lost ark

8. Terminator

9. ET

10. Evil dead

and Ka nu khawnge i awm

Movies were rented at Rs10 per night and Rs5 for half-day. If u borrowed 2 or more sometimes they will throw in an extra one free of charge. But u had to check that the film(the reel as we called it) was even and not serrated(a tlang kir) at the edge as that wud result in jumpy pictures and cause "dirty head" (a head bal) to the VCR player, and rewinding the tapes seemed like the longest 2 minutes of a lifetime.

Hulkamania conquered the entertainment world with his crazy antics, superhuman strength and showmanship, and everyone caught the wrestling bug , then available only on VHS tapes. Music videos were available only on tapes as well. I remember seeing Starship's Nothing gonna stop us now, Dire Strait's Money for nothing and Queen's I want to break free.

Those were the magical days for ppl like me...i can go on & on but that's it for now. I'l try and cover music, video games and other forms of entertainment in Part II, til then LONG LIVE THE 80s.

Let me be the first to comment (Unless someone already did while I'm typing this!)
"Love live the 80s" I lived it all. (startin' to get old, are we!) and you forgot to mention the chain of senseless-violence Barbarian flicks, inspired by Conan, yet the story was the last thing we watched it for anyway??
BMX was another great fad of the 80's which was truly memorable, the ramps we made for tricks and the scrapes we get for kicks (Why do i keep rhyming!!)
McGyver was the most brilliant thing I'd ever seen back then, yet when it returned on Start World recently, I didn't enjoy it one bit.
I guess Adulthood takes all the fun out of Childhood.. lolz.

You missed the Mullah's call for prayer in the evening, which goes something like - "hiarllah, allah...allah uan-to-be-bu" , on the Bangladeshi channel.
You also forgot to mention Knightrider which was aired at 8 in the night starring David Hasselfoff and his talking car.
Not to forget are the English leagues and Liverpool were the biggest club with Ian Rush being the biggest star...favourite teams were Liverpool,Nottingham Forest,Sheffield Wednesday....not a soul said anything about Manchester United,Chelsea,Arsenal back then!!!
'The World This Week, was anchored by Rrannoy Roy and now rechristened as NDTV 24x7.
Besides the news in hindi there was the news for the dumb and mute being aired using sign language, which was a must see.
Renting the latest hindi movie would leave you Rs.30/- poorer, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was the biggest super duper hit.
And ofcourse one has to climb upto the roof and constantly adjust the antenna, redirecting it towards Banladesh and the folks back down in front of the TV would shout in unision "aw aw aw a fiah...fiah leh lo...tlem a lang..a bo leh..a 'muri'..tikhan a fiah lutuk,a khuavang chhinchhiah poh a hmuh theih !!!! "

@ Mimi: A zahzel ah a rawn nui vel mai mai! hihihi!

Chitrahaar, MucGuyver etc - lung a ti leng. Annd I've seen every single movie you listed out, and all of them more than once!

OpaHmar said...

and don't forget the grammy awards which was the only time we got to see music videos. i particularly remember grammys 85 (i think) - michael jackson's beat it, cindy lauper's girl's just wanna have fun, tina turner's what's love gotta to with it....
aah, the swinging 80s.

Jerusha said...

LOL - OP, very close! I know all the Grease songs by heart, love Tanya Tucker, but I don't have even one Gospel Centenary shirt :)

My earliest fav shows were Little House on the Prairie and Paper Chase. We had a b/w TV by the '82 World Cup (at a time when you were still a twinkle in your parents' eyes perhaps!) and I fell madly in love with Falcao of Brazil (cos he looked like the Paper Chase guy).

About the English league football matches shown on Saturdays around 11 am, the biggest club was Everton then and Gary Linekar was their prized striker..

Lianchhiari said...

Back then we always have Grease 2, Baby Love and Dance Dance to see through Krismas Eve. In group we used to roam around Chaltlang and Laipuitlang area, pay visit to frens and then sleep together (boys & girls) on the floor eating chow (artui & tomato nena kan)and let the video tape roll till everybody dozed off! If we are lucky, we share kawltheizu and buhhumzu for appetizer.
On sunday, we used to rush home after Sunday School to catch Ek-Do-Teen-Char... it's all coming back to me now! Thanks op for digging out the good old days! BMX poh a hma ka choi ve thin tak asin!

KIDS!! Why doesn't some one write about the real swinging era,the
60s' & 70s.

OpaHmar said...

@Calliopia - heard of House on the prairie (just heard) but Paper chase naah! Yes i heard that WC football was witnessed by a few in 82 and thats how it became very popular in 86, where Falcao still played I think and Zico missed a penalty shot losing to France

OpaHmar said...

@Lianchhiari - ah Grease2! and dance dance with our fav Mithun definitely defined the 80s
Chow kan artui led tomato nen...sa thring a awm remchan chuan, leh chana kan (motor chana not mutter)

@dr_feelgood - 60s & 70s are for the 'has-beens'; 80s for the 'havings' and 90s for the 'becomings':-)

Malsawmi Jacob said...

Feeling quite nostalgic for that decade though i was already grown up. We had a small black and white TV, no DVD player, and eagerly waited for the night shows of 'Tenali Rama', 'Flop Show' 'Himalayan Darshan', etc. in Hindi. We did enjoy the shows more than we do all the choice movies we can pick now, didn't we?

dr_feelgood said...

Hets!! I refuse to be labelled a 'has been'! Seriously though, I think music wise, musicians of the 60' & 70's have the most profound effect on todays. Someone even claimed that Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues'is the precursor of RAP.You can find traces of Beatles, The Who, Grand Funk etc,in todays Metals. And those early Progressive sound of Emerson Lake and Palmer(ELP) Moody Blues, and the Blues Rock guitars of Hendrix, Blackmore etc. I think there are still 'hippies' in the US. But me, I'll just grow old gracefully, and cling to the past.

OpaHmar said...

@ mesjay - Pi MJ, i van ti dik...with all our choices of movies and channels to watch, we would be like ..."there's nothing to watch"
Spoilt like Veronica who never have anything to wear

@ dr_feelgood - of course the 60s & 70s rocked, still rock! Am not really into music as my latest blog wud tell, but I do appreciate the superiority of music back than. I think the 80s was great...but the 90s spoiled everything save a few artists

I adore anything 80s; music, movies, tv shows and art...except maybe 80s fashion...tacky and loud... elaborate hair-dos and glossy, bright make-up!

Do you remember the barbapapa family? ( replaced by Smurf later on).. a cartoon show from Bangaldesh network. I was a real sucker for that. I was once in Paris and there was this shop totally devoted to Barbapapa! ( I totally flipped and felt like a kid all over again). 'Man from the atlantis' used to scare the hell out of me. Back then,Knight rider was the coolest guy EVER!!
